The Black
Shamrock

The Black Shamrock is our symbol of resistance. The Black Shamrock is our declaration of opposition to any Irish involvement, be it economic, strategic or logistical, in war and the war economy. It is a call for a new socially and ecologically informed vision of human security, which places economics and the state at the service of human rights, the Rights of Nature and the well-being of people and the planet.  The Black Shamrock symbolises our resistance to the ongoing deliberate assault on Irish Neutrality. And our call for a foreign policy guided by an active and principled Neutrality. The Black Shamrock is a grassroots non-party political, non-partisan campaign to highlight the views of the majority of people in Ireland and the rest of the world - that we want no part in war, neocolonialism and occupation, and instruct our leaders to follow Irish and International law and immediately withdraw support from such inhuman folly.  The Black Shamrock stands for our steadfast solidarity with the people of Palestine as they face the ongoing Western-backed Israeli occupation, military onslaught and industrial-scale genocide in Gaza.   The Black Shamrock symbolises our mourning for all those who have died as a result of Irish collaboration in conflicts such as the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and all those who have died and are dying still as a result of the devastation those wars have unleashed, for which the airports at Shannon, Aldergrove and Baldonnel became “pit-stops”. We oppose the continuing complicity, across the island by both states and commercial interests, in the production of weapons systems.  The Black Shamrock is a celebration of our history and culture, and pride in our struggles for equality, dignity and justice, in Ireland and across the world.  It calls for an active and radical vigilance in the face of attempts by the far-right to co-opt that history in order to divide, and exploit.  The Black Shamrock welcomes the support of members of all political parties and none.

Our Manifesto

The ongoing genocide in Gaza - enabled by Western powers - dramatically underlines the urgency of the objectives of the Black Shamrock campaign.

The original Black Shamrock campaign was launched in 2006, prompted by a need to make visible citizen opposition to a series of Government-sanctioned attacks on Ireland’s neutrality.

These attacks included the use of Shannon Airport by US military on their way to and from wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, and for stop-over flights engaged in illegal rendition.
